# Captioning Group Conversations on Ava

Learn how to use Ava to follow group conversations with up to 25 participants.

## Group Conversation on Ava Mobile

### Group conversation settings

If you have an **Ava Starter** or **Ava Pro** subscription, you can change your group conversation connection settings. Think of this like social media privacy settings.

You have a few options. Here's what they are and what they mean:

- **Private**: You will receive a request when one of your friends wishes to join your conversation. You'll need to accept this request for them to access your Ava conversation.
- **Group**: If they are present in your Ava contact list, they will automatically join your Ava conversation when you connect or send an invitation.
- **Public - Interactive**: They will automatically join your Ava conversation whether they are in your friend list or not and will be able to interact with the transcript.
- **Public - Read-only**: They will automatically join your Ava conversation but will not be able to interact with the transcript.

**To change the settings**:
1. When you start an Ava conversation, tap on the **⚙️ settings icon** (top right of the screen).
2. At the bottom of your screen, tap on "**Conversation Mode**" to open the drop-down menu.
3. Select the setting you wish to apply.

### Join a Group Conversation

1. Have one participant **start a new** Ava conversation.
2. Join the conversation via several methods:
   - 👤 **+Add** gives the option to join via QR code or other options.
   - 🟦 **[QR Code](https://help.ava.me/en/articles/2752252-captioning-group-conversations-on-ava#h_e6b69a897b)** provides options for joining via QR code.
   - ⬆️ **Share** allows joining via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or copying the link.
3. Choose the method to join, and the other participants will join immediately.

### Join a Conversation via QR Code

1. In the “**Contacts**” tab or in a conversation, click on the QR code icon.
2. Scan a **QR code** or share your own.
3. The participant receives a notification and joins the conversation.

### Start a Group Conversation with Ava Contacts

If you have friends with an Ava account, you can connect with them easily through the Contacts Page:
1. Open Ava and tap 👥 **Contacts**.
2. Either **search** your friend's [Ava Name](https://help.ava.me/en/articles/1622533-how-can-i-change-my-ava-name) or **find** their contact.
3. Tap **Join** to connect to their group conversation.

Once connected, they will be added to your Contacts list.

*Depending on their settings, your conversation partner will join instantly or be invited to accept your invitation.*

## How to join an Ava conversation without an Ava account

1. Open the 📸 camera app on your phone and **scan the Ava QR Code**.
2. Ava will automatically open **Safari**.
3. **Allow Ava** to have access to the 🎙️ Microphone.
4. You have joined the conversation successfully!

## Group Conversation on your Computer

When using **Ava Web** or **Ava Desktop**, it is recommended that all participants use headphones to increase accuracy in captions.

### Inviting Participants from Your Conversation Session
1. **Open** Ava Web or Ava Desktop.
2. 🎙 **Start a conversation** (if not already opened).
3. Click on your 👤 **profile icon**.
4. Click 🔗 **Copy Invitation**.
5. **Send the link** to anyone, they can join from their phone or computer - no Ava Account needed!
6. Participants will appear in the participants section once they join.

### Joining Open Conversation Sessions
If someone has started a conversation session, you can join from your computer:
1. Open Ava Web or Ava Desktop.
2. Right-click on the **three dots** to see the menu.
3. Click **Join a Room** and enter the Ava Name of the conversation.
4. Now you're in the conversation!

### Joining an Ava Conversation without an Ava Account
1. Go to [ava.me](/content/site-root.html).
2. Click **"Get Started"** in the top right corner.
3. It will open [web.ava.me](http://web.ava.me/), allowing you to login or join a Conversation by entering an Ava Room name.
4. Type in the host's Ava Name to enter the conversation!
